The elephant in religion, art and as a symbol

A certain West-African tribe believes that elephants are the ancestors of mankind, and pygmies in the Ituri-forest in the Congo believe that elephants carry the souls of dead people. In Asia the elephant is worshipped, and the Hindu religion has a god with an elephantís head: Ganesh, the god of wisdom and good fortune, protects traders, teachers, and students. Japanese superstition says that an elephant figurine next to your bed will keep nightmares away.

The elephant is frequently used as a symbol: in Denmark the highest honour is to be accepted as a member of the Order of the Elephant. The American Republican party (president George W. Bushís party) uses the elephant as its symbol, and many companies, including well-known ones which produce chocolate or toys, have an elephant logo...
